Can AI Build Your Website? What Nobody Tells You About AI Web Design

I've spent the last few months testing every major AI website builder I could find. 10Web, Durable, Framer AI, Hostinger AI, Wix ADI. I wanted to see if they were genuinely good enough to replace what we do. Here's what I found.

What AI actually does well

Let me give credit where it's due. AI website builders have got genuinely impressive at:

Speed. You can have a basic website in 30 seconds. That's not an exaggeration.

Layout. The AI picks sensible page structures. Hero section, services, testimonials, contact. The bones are usually right.

Colour schemes. Tell it your brand colour and it generates a decent palette.

First drafts. As a starting point to show a client "something like this", they're useful.

Where it falls apart

The copy is generic rubbish. This is the biggest problem. AI writes things like "We're passionate about delivering solutions that actually help your business to achieve its goals." Nobody talks like that. Your customers can smell AI copy from a mile away, and it makes your business look like every other business.

No understanding of your customers. AI doesn't know that your ideal client is a 45-year-old accountant in Ipswich who needs invoice automation, not a Silicon Valley startup. It can't tailor the message, the tone, or the user journey to your specific audience.

Security is an afterthought. AI generates the site. Who keeps it secure? Who applies patches when vulnerabilities are found? Who monitors for malware? The AI certainly does not. You're either doing that yourself or paying someone else to do it anyway.

SEO is surface-level at best. AI can add meta titles and descriptions. But proper SEO requires understanding local search intent, competitor analysis, content strategy, technical optimisation, and ongoing effort. No AI tool does this well yet.

No accountability. If your AI-built website goes down, who fixes it? If it gets hacked, who cleans it up? If your Google rankings drop, who diagnoses why? With AI, you're on your own.

The doctor analogy

I keep coming back to this comparison because it's genuinely apt. You can Google your symptoms and ChatGPT will give you a pretty decent explanation of what might be wrong. But would you skip the doctor and start treating yourself based on what an AI told you? Of course not. The stakes are too high.

Your website is the same. AI can give you a starting point, even a good one. But if your business depends on your online presence (and in 2026, it almost certainly does), you want someone who understands the full picture: design, development, SEO, security, performance, and how real humans actually use websites.

The smart approach

Use AI as a tool, not a replacement. Generate a draft to clarify your thinking. Show it to a professional and say "something like this, but done properly." That conversation saves time and money for everyone.

We use AI in our own workflow. It helps us work faster and smarter. But the strategy, the design decisions, the code quality, the security, and the ongoing support? That's all human expertise. That's what you're actually paying for.

Want to see the difference between an AI-generated site and a properly built one? Get in touch and we'll show you.
