AI for Small Businesses: What is Actually Useful Right Now

There's a lot of noise around AI right now. Every tech company wants you to believe their AI product will change how your business works. Most of it's marketing fluff. But some of it's genuinely useful, even for small businesses.

Here's what is actually worth paying attention to.

Customer service chatbots

This is probably the most immediately useful AI application for small businesses. A well-configured chatbot on your website can handle the repetitive questions that eat up your time: pricing queries, opening hours, booking requests, basic FAQs.

The key word is "well-configured". A bad chatbot is worse than no chatbot. But a good one can handle 60-80% of routine enquiries without any human involvement, freeing you up to focus on the work that actually needs your attention.

Invoice and document processing

If you're still manually entering invoice data into spreadsheets, AI can help. Tools like AWS Textract can read invoices (even messy, handwritten ones) and extract the key information automatically. For a business processing more than 50 invoices a month, the time savings are significant.

Content assistance

AI is genuinely helpful for drafting content. Not as a replacement for your own voice and expertise, but as a starting point. Need to write a service description? A blog post? An email to a client? AI can give you a first draft that you then edit and make your own.

The businesses that use AI well for content are the ones that treat it as a tool, not a replacement. Your knowledge, your experience, your local perspective, that's what makes your content valuable. AI just helps you get it out of your head and onto the page faster.

Email marketing

AI can help segment your customer list, suggest the best times to send, and even personalise subject lines for better open rates. If you're sending the same email to everyone on your list, you're leaving performance on the table.

What isn't worth it (yet)

For most small businesses, fully autonomous AI agents, AI-generated video content, and complex predictive analytics are more trouble than they're worth right now. The technology is improving fast, but the setup cost and complexity are still too high for most local businesses.

Where to start

Pick one thing that eats up your time and explore whether AI can help with it. Start small, measure the results, and expand from there. You don't need to transform your entire business overnight.

Want to explore what AI could do for your business specifically? Let's have a conversation about it.
